Involvement with Hartley Lifecare
Since 1985 the Rotary Club has placed an emphasis on supporting the ACT Society for the Physically Handicapped. In recent years, the Society has changed its name to Hartley Lifecare.
This did not mean a change in direction for the Rotary Club. Rather, it provided a definite focus for activity in helping young people with disabilities. Hartley Lifecare provides two residential care facilities at Hartley House in Turner and Hartley Court in Garran.
The Project
At first our commitment began with helping with the set-up at the Hall Markets. The Markets provide a significant source of the income for the salaries for Hartley Lifecare staff. All other moneys received are devoted by Hartley Lifecare to their work with the young folk with disabilities.
While there is still some support for the Hall Markets our emphasis has changed to supporting Hartley Lifecare's Christmas Party held at Hartley Court. The party is for the residents and their families from Hartley Court and Hartley House. We include our families too. What an atmosphere it is!
It is our pleasure to put on the function and to support the feeling of community such an event creates for the residents, their families and their carers. The joy it brings to the residents and their families makes it more than worthwhile. And helps to liven up our own Christmas celebrations with our own families and friends.
